PFC chokes

To the inquiry list

For limiting the mains harmonics of non-linear loads on the AC mains. So-called power factor correction controllers (PFC controllers) are being used more and more frequently, especially for primary switched-mode power supplies and frequency converters.

Conventional switched-mode power supplies and frequency converters draw their energy from the AC mains, rectify the AC voltage and use it to feed a DC intermediate circuit from which the switching stages are supplied. This results in non-uniform current consumption from the mains, in that the current only ever flows when the mains voltage exceeds the DC link voltage plus the breakdown voltage of the rectifier. This non-sinusoidal current consumption generates strong mains harmonics and worsens the efficiency of other devices connected to the mains.
